It takes a bunch of genres and twists them into a blender, a pop relic that still feels current. or know the Hollywood scene, it offers a few added tidbits for laughs, but I think most anyone with a love of movies in general can appreciate what Kiss Kiss is going for. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang has a whole lot to like about it. He has fun with the story, skipping around when he feels like it, but it never feels like a showoff or without point. Nothing looks better on film than wet streets at night and Barrett's work brings out that nourish look of the past without the aid of black-and-white cinematography. The film is exceptionally well-shot noir (with the help of D.P. To top it all off, this is also Shane Black's directorial debut, and what a job he does.
I rarely say this, but I'd be the first in line for a sequel (probably not a great chance of this since, as Black mentions in the commentary, this film made about $1.50 in release). The best movies make you want more of the characters when the credits roll, and this one is just such a case. She's also got the girl-next-door quality that makes her relationship and past with Harry work so well. She's got the perfect look for the part and she oozes a brave sexiness slinking around in tight dresses (and out of them). Michelle Monaghan - who looks different in just about every part she plays - is beautiful and tough as Harmony. Kilmer and Downey, Jr.'s chemistry is terrific, one of the most purely entertaining screen couples in years.
He talks fast and simple and expects those around him to think and act as fast as he does. Perry is both metro-sexual modern and a soul from the past. Val Kilmer, who never fails to impress me, is hysterical as "Gay Perry." Featuring a gay man as the tough guy and hero is a send-up in and of itself, but it's more than just a one-note joke.
